Off-grid Solar Energy System-A photovoltaic solar energy system in which the circuits energized by the solar energy system are not electrically connected in any way to electric circuits that are served by an electric utility company.
The term off-grid refers to not being connected to a grid, mainly used in terms of not being connected to the main or national electrical grid. In electricity, off-grid can be stand-alone systems (SHS) or mini-grids typically to provide a smaller community with electricity. Off-grid electrification is an approach to access electricity used in countries and areas with little access to electricity, due to scattered or distant populations. It can be any kind of electricity generation. The term off-the-grid (OTG) can refer to living in a self-sufficient manner without reliance on one or more public utilities.
Off-the-grid homes are autonomous; they do not rely on municipal water supply, sewer, natural gas, electrical power grid, or similar utility services. A true off-grid house is able to operate completely independently of all traditional public utility services.
Off-grid solar electric systems need "balance-of-system" equipment, to be properly sized based on energy loads, and the appropriate permits before installation. Oftentimes an off-grid solar system makes sense in rural areas where it is difficult and expensive to extend existing power lines to connect with the grid (which can cost between $15,000 and $50,000 per mile), but an off-grid system can also make sense elsewhere.
Once you’ve decided an off-grid system makes sense, you will need to analyze your electricity load to understand how your energy needs fluctuate daily and annually. Before you determine your system capacity, consider energy efficiency measures that can be implemented. During the analyzing stage, we encourage you to have a professional conduct a home energy assessment. If you are building a new home, work with the builder to incorporate renewable energy into the home’s design. Our professional staff will consult with you and go over all the best options for you.
